Paginate Reports - Data retrieval failed for subreport

As of yesterday, intermittently we are getting the error in paginated reports "Data retrieval failed for subreport" in the Power BI Service.

This is very frustrating as it is random, can happen for one user and not another despite them having exactly the same security privlidges.

Investigation to date:

Checked this page. Nothing there help resolve this intermitten issue:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/paginated-reports/subreports-troubleshoot

Check resource levels in Gen 2 premium capacity using MS App. No where near max consumption of available:

Did other internet searches. These mainly point to SSRS development issues that are not relevant to how we have built our parent and sub reports.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Hello!

Could you please give some more information here. Is th subreport accessing an On-prem data source or a Power Bi Service Dataset in Live connection?

We can diagnose these sub report issues by only 1 way... You would need to install Power Bi report Server on-prem and then deploy this rdl to the server ... Then running it would create a detailed log in your reportServer folders and they point exactly to the reason (timeout, parameter or any other issue)

Also you may try to run profiler against your data source if that is SQL or Live Power BI dataset (refer article below for profiler)

Thanks Mohammed

However I know how to use sub-reports in Power BI paginated reports.

The issue is the intermittent error we are getting as per my post.

Thanks

Adam

Hi Jay

The issues forum looks like somewhere to suggest and vote for features and/or improvements. I have an error that has only recently manisfested, not an idea.

I am going to log a call with MS.

Thanks

Adam

Hi Adam,

If you can get the root activity ID for a failed sub report render, we can take a look and see if there is anything in traces. You might also want to contact support and file an incident if it is still happening.

You can get it a browser debugger if it is not anywhere visible in the report. In chrome, F-12 and get this line from the headers for the "render" call.
