Hi All,
Recently in our PowerBI - SAP BW environment, we have seen a high load on one of the nodes of BW server and found that one of the users running multiple RFC sessions as he had some heavy data to be extracted in Power BI. It had exhausted all the dialog process on the server. Our basis team had to cancel the jobs of the user which were running to keep the balance of that BW node. We had recommended user to make use of the load balancer option instead of direct server name on power BI by connecting to the Business Warehouse Message Server. Later, though the user has enabled the load balancing in his report, the real problem seems to be with the size of query as many MDX queries run in parallel for a long time creating this bottleneck on application as well as infrastructure. Whenever, this user executes the query from PowerBI the CPU utilization spikes up and chokes the server.
So, temporarily we focussed on optimizing the query in order to resolve this.
As we expect the number of users/connections on On-premises data gateway and in turn the risk of high data usage would grow with time, we are exploring options to restrict/cutoff users consuming more than stipulated amount of memory on BW or have a safety belt on data extraction from Power BI reports.
Could someone please provide suggestions/pointers in this regard?
Best Regards,
Abhilash V
Raise a ticket with the Microsoft team (assuming you have a Pro license) and alert them of the issue. Same happened a while back with the Salesforce Object connector that was wasting API calls like there was no tomorrow.
