I am using a direct query and I learned that I need to have on-premise data gateway as a service in enterprise mode- for the direct query. I used SSMS for the direct query (have remote access to the SQL server, not installed on my laptop), and I have the on-premises data gateway installed on the server with my power bi credentials(not my laptop). The gateway cluster is added and the connection is successful, however, when I go to the published report I cannot see anything and it throws an error that says 'there is no gateway to access the data source'. Verify the gateway connection configuration on the data settings page and make sure all required data sources are added to the selected data gateway' and the connection in that page says it's successful, can someone please help me out with this?
Hi @Anonymous ,

SSMS is just a client of SQL Server, how did you configure it for the direct query? Besides, PowerBI Gateway can also been seen as a client, you need to configure it with the SQL Server credentials. Please refer to this document to configure the gateway: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-sql-tutorial.
By the way, PowerBI Gateway is a free tool.
