Multiple Accounts for same data server

A few threads about this but nothing exactly what I need.

I have a Teradata server and I need to connect to it via multiple accounts.

I notice that I am able to set up multiple data sources for a gateway that are identical in every respect but with different credentials.

How then does the service (or the gateway) decide which connection to actually use?

The reason I ask is because we have been asked to connect using credentials specific to each report area (they share the same data server - sometimes different databases) and there is only one gateway.
