MongoDB behind Gateway

Is there anyway to connect to a MongoDB data source behind an enterpise gateway to get real time data updates?

Right now I know I can query MongoDB two ways

1. ODBC Connector
2. Query via R

Both of these options work decently although the ODBC is extremely slow when going over 500K rows of data.  Alot of the reports my company is building need to be real time reports.  I can't have the data be stale for more than a minute.  Our SQL databases that are behind the gateway all are able to use DirectQuery and they work great but alot of our new applications are using MongoDB and its really hurting the ability to use PowerBI
