Mixing Azure and on-prem sources - require gateway for Azure?

Hi,

We have an enterprise data gateway setup that is working fine. We also have users connecting to Azure sources for their reports.

I'm seeing issues where a user cannot schedulea  refresh in PowerBI Service when there is data gateway connections + Azure sources (like Azure SQL DB) until I add the Azure SQL DB to the gateway.

My understanding is that I shouldn't have to do that, that the gateway would handle the on-premise connections and Azure would be handled without it.

Am I incorrect?
