Making a live connection to a cube on a machine disconnected from the domain

With the current lockdown, i'm working on some Power BI dashboard. What i have done is to restore an SSAS cube to an SSAS instance on my laptop and then use it as source for my report during development using live connection.

Now when i publish the report to my organisation's workspace in the power bi service, i'm prompted to add the dataset to a gateway before my report can display. Because the existing gateway in the organisation's workspace can not connect to my machine which is home outside the domain, i installed a personal gateway on my laptop and i can access it from the organisation's workspace.

I have added the report data source to this personal gateway. I have also gone the data source settings ==> map user names ==> Effective user names and set my email address (which i use to log into power bi) to be replaced with my domain account which is an admin on the local SSAS instance.

When i try to run the report with sql profiler attached to my SSAS instance, i get the error below. Does any one know how i can solve it.

The following system error occurred: We can't sign you in with this credential because your domain isn't available. Make sure your device is connected to your organization's network and try again. If you previously signed in on this device with another credential, you can sign in with that credential.

Hi @kadingo ,

Has your problem been solved?

1. The Windows account you enter must have Server Administrator permissions for the instance you're connecting to.

2. The Windows account must be present in an Analysis Services role.

Have you fulfilled these two requirements?

@v-lionel-msft  yes the windows account i'm entering has Server Administrator permissions for the instance of SSAS i'm connecting to. That account has always worked when i'm on my orgarnisation's network and its not part of any Analysis Services role.

Hi @kadingo ,

I haven't tested your problem yet, are you sure that your mapping rules are correct?

Try to refer to Manage your data source - Analysis Services .
