Limit export permission to selected apps

Hello.

I want to give export rights to every user in my company but limit the export rights to selected apps.

I know that I can create security groups to give export rights to specific users, but unless I am mistaken, this allows the selected users to export everything and it does not limit them to selected apps.

I know that one solution would be to not give access to the apps I don't want them to export data from, but I want them to be able to see them, just not export the data.

Is it possible?

Hi @Anonymous,

Power BI Service doesn't support to limit export permission to specific apps, we can only grant permissions based on user account level.

As a workaround, you can checkbox the 'Don't allow end users to export any data from service' option (File -> Options and Settings ->Current File -> Report Settings -> Export Data) in Power BI desktop and republish current file to the service. That way, any end user is not allowed to export data from this report via any method to view this report (like share report, dashboard or Workspace App). And, if you want such a requirement that current report data can be exported in App1 while is restricted to be exported in App2, it is not achievable.

@Anonymous - To remove the ability to export data altogether you can in your pbix file go to Options -- > Report Settings and select 'Don't allow end users to export any data from service' and republish the file to the service.

You can also turn off visual headers of the visuals wherein you want to restrict any kind of export.

Thirdly, you can turn off ALL visual headers from the service itself, by clicking on the gear option next to the report. I do not know of any functionality wherein certain users can be allowed to export while other's are restricted.

In all of the above, they will be able to view the data if there is no RLS, or if RLS is there it is set correctly to populate their views.
