I'm looking to move my Premium capacity to another region, will my dataflows still work?

Hi, I'm looking to move my Power BI Premium capacity into a new region. I'm planning to set up a second capacity, migrate everything from my current capacity to the new capacity, then delete the old capacity.

My question is regarding dataflows. My new capacity will be in a different region from my organisation's tenant. How will this affect dataflows? The dataflows will need to be in dedicated capacity because they sit behind our self-service BI function for free users under the Premium infrastructure. Can dataflows sit in a different region from the tenancy if on Power BI Premium capacity?

HI @Anonymous,

If your data source credentials do not contain any region/geo-based settings, it probably reduces the performance of operations without serious effects. (e.g. the delay of requests that send/receive between two regions)

Perhaps you can take a look at following document about moving/migrate your tenants:

How to request your data move

@v-shex-msft I do not want to move my tenant so that documentation is not useful.

I just want to move my Premium capacity to a different geo. Is there any documentation on this, and how it affects dataflows?

Thanks.

Hi @Anonymous,

In fact, the shared documents also not explain these scenarios clearly. Perhaps you can contact to power bi premium support for further documents about the move data region.

Hi there

As far as I am aware that should work.

Because it is located physically in a different region it will then possibly take a bit longer for things to run as it has to move over a larger distance.

With that being said there were some improvements with Multi Geo: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/announcing-performance-improvements-for-multi-geo-premium-c...

@GilbertQ The link you posted has a query in the comments about whether dataflows are supported in multi-geo reporting. This is the query I am looking to answer - but thanks for the link.
