How to make Gateway Online all the time?

Here's the scenario :

I am connected to our Active Directory in Power BI
Gateway already installed.
Currently working at home and need a VPN to connect to my company's network. I noticed that whenever I am connected to the VPN. Scheduled refresh or On-demand refresh works fine but whenever I disconnected to the VPN everything fails...

Is there a way to resolve this issue?  perhaps workaround maybe?

I don't want to be online and connected to our VPN all the time 24/7 to make those refreshes successful

Hi @v_mark

Yes installing a GW is quite easy as you've done in your machine. VM is like another windows machine just running on the cloud with higher specs (generally more than local machine). So maybe for start you can opt for 8-12 GB ram and 500 sdd and then can install the on-prem gw in the vm.

Hi! @v_mark

The MS suggest the best practice is to have an On Prem GW on a VM that is always active and for a GW to be online your system should be online. So, only solution I know is that you should setup a GW on a VM.

Is it just like setting up a normal GW inside a VM?

I'm kinda new to that step. Is there a doc that I can use and follow for this approach?

Hello,

I tried doing that and now the "authentication without impersonation" is failing when trying to login into the data source. It worked locally, is it because I do not log into the new server with the same account?

Hi @v_mark

A VM is going and has to work just like your machine and through your VPN, so yes a GW will have to be installed in that VM. not a recommended practice if you ask me espacially when a very sensitive data is in the game, so better be present, connected to your machine and you do the refresh than leaving a VM on it's own.

The best practice is to install the Gateway on Premises, and let Power bi take care of its security.
