How I can place the Power BI reports on a single portal for my clients?

Hi Team,

I have a requirement from a client where they want the reports generated using the Power BI desktop to be published on a single portal.

Elaborating the requirements further, we have a report for Sales Data and another for HR Data. The requirement is to have a single web portal for e.g. abcinfo@powerbi.com where we can place 2 reports and users on the basis of their access rights can see the reports.

As I am beginner in Power BI need to know the detailed process to achieve it.

Another thing, if I have a Pro license then the users with whom I am sharing the report should also have a Pro license?

Thanks a lot Team in advance.

Please try with RLS with Power BI. Different users can be defined as different roles, and they can be restricted to see part of the data in one report.

Following documents should be good tutorials.

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-admin-rls/

http://radacad.com/row-level-security-configuration-in-power-bi-desktop

If the shared report contains pro content, then the users with whom you are sharing need a Pro license. If not, then both Power BI free and Pro users can consume the shared report.

Please refer to following document for what is pro content.

Herbert

Power BI Embedded is needed only when you want to integrate your PowerBI report with a web application. It has nothing to do with content pack.

Yes. The users will also require pro license. There is a 60 day free trial version available.

Hi @v-haibl-msft,

Thanks a lot for sharing these important links where I can implement the role based access on my reports.

Will implement the same and share the feedback.

Many Thanks.

You can create a group/content pack and publish the reports to this group and add only those users who should have access to these set of reports.

Also, the users will also require to have a pro version of powerbi. PowerBI allows users to upgrade to pro version for a trial period of 60 days for free.

Hi @vanessa

Thanks for your response.

Could you please clear following points:

  • I am not supposed to design a separate web application and use Power BI Embedded if am using Organizational Content packs?
  • If using content packs which a Pro feature, the users accessing the reports should also get a Pro license.

Thanks again.

@vanessa

Another thing is that, it is feasible to share the report with a set of users in an organization using content packs or with Power BI Embedded subscription model?

I might sound weird but am just starting with it and working on foundation so don't want to make a design fault.

Because clients want a portal where the reports can be accessed by a single sign-in. If this can be achieved I am fine with content packs.

Thanks

@anmsharma

A group/content pack will have the same UI as when you login to your PowerBI account. Along with 'My Workspace' group, the new group that you create will be visible.

If you are looking for a custom web portal, then you will probably have to make use of PowerBI Embedded.

The challenge here is that I have to implement a solution where I can't force the end-users to buy a Pro license as they just want to view the report without any edits.

So, can we achieve using content packs or emded the Power Bi reports in the web portal? That's the situation I want to understand.

Can we achieve this using Power BI Embedded or Organizational Content Packs would do the job.

Please suggest.

Thanks
