Hidden reports no longer accessible in Multiple App Audiences experience

We have apps with a lot of reports that are not in the app navigation sidebar. Previously they were reached by using report links. Problems started once the new app experience was enabled and we would start getting "Report Not Found" issues when trying to use a report link to get to a report. We were able to get mostly around this with random workarounds like unhiding, re-hiding the reports, but now even that isn't working.

Is there any way around this? There are many frustrated customers as you can see in the blog comments: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/announcing-public-preview-of-multiple-audiences-for-power-b...

It is not practical to have a sidebar of dozens of reports that are not top level reports, but should only be accessed via report links.
