Download pbix file with live connection datasett new option

Hi,

Could someone explain to me the difference between the 2 option when one tries to download the pbix file. This did not showed up before.

I think the first option was default before, but what is "copy of report with live connection..."?

Hi @Anonymous

This is a new option that's just turned up. You're right the top option was the old defult. This downloads the PBIX, visualisation and Data in the Datamodel. In this option the Data sources point back to the origin file locations (which you may not have access to). Clicking refresh in Power BI DEstop will go back to these original data locations and read the data afresh. This is good if you have access to these data location, but not so good if you don't. (For example the files are on a Sharepoint location you don't have access to).

The second, new, option downloads the PBIX but with a live link to the Dataset in the Power BI cloud. This means the data is permanently connected to the Dataset in the cloud, and clicking refresh updates the visualisations with the data from the Dataset in the power BI cloud.

See Connect to datasets in the Power BI service from Power BI Desktop - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

Note this option is not available for Reports in "My Workspace" or in other circumstances where live data connections are not supported.

Hope this helps

Stuart
