Deploy model to Power BI Workspace from Visual Studio 2017

Hi all,

Recently, the XMLA endpoints Read/Write capability was released into preview for Premium Capacity workspaces. See the video here.

As I was trying out this new feature, I wanted to try and deploy an existing level 1500 Tabular Model currently hosted in Azure Analysis Services. However, after following these instructions I am prompted with a error.

Cannot deploy metadata. Reason: This operation is not supported by the Power BI Premium product.

What could be the problem here?

Alright, so after explaining the new possibilities to a collegae I noticed something. When going through the tenant capacity settings (https://app.powerbi.com/admin-portal/capacities/) the XMLA-endpoint was still "read" instead of "Read Write".

So the solution was to change the settings, and scroll down and hit "Apply".

@nickyvv Thanks for your article, going through it once more solved the problem.

I found a blog post by @nickyvv on the very same subject.

At the end of the blog post it mentions some important points to go over:

  • Go read the documentation first  ✓
  • Enable Read Write for XMLA Endpoints at your Premium Capacity ✓
  • Enable the Export data setting in the Power BI Admin Portal ✓
  • Make sure your localhost is compat level 1500 or use the Integrated Workspace Mode ✓
  • Delete any role memberships in your model during the public preview ✓
  • A write operation on a dataset will prevent it from being downloaded back as a PBIX file   N/A
  • Did I already mention it is still a preview feature? 🙂
