Data Gateway Configuration Error despite not using Gate nor any on-prem data sources

I've never used a Data Gateway and have no real need for one. I've always just connected to online sources through internal sharepoints for some pretty simple analysis of excel spreadsheet data.

I added an external online source from jotform.com, but now the PBI Service is treating my data set as if it requires a Gateway configuration.

I have double checked and all of my data sources used are from the web: an internal sharepoint site and jotform.com. My credentials are setup with an organizational account to access the excel files on the sharepoint site and the jotform table is accessible anonymously.

Refreshing the data sources in PBI Desktop works perfectly, but on the Service I get this error:

Refresh failed due to gateway configuration issues.
This dataset requires a properly configured gateway in order to refresh.

If you're using personal mode, please make sure your gateway is online.

If you're using enterprise mode, please make sure you've added the following data sources in the Gateway Management Portal

----

When I try to adjust the settings for this Data Source in my workspace on the Service, it is locked on and there's no way for me to disable it. I'm being prompted to setup a gateway.

Is there a way to fix these configuration issues? I do not want to use a Data Gateway, and my understanding is that I should not have to with these online data sources.

How can I make sure the Service is configured to treat my sources as web sources and eliminate this gateway error?

hi, @dpancratz

Please check if your data source needs a gateway

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-onprem

and if your gateway is online and set well.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-manage

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-custom-connectors

and if you have configured scheduled refresh well

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/refresh-scheduled-refresh

Best Regards,

Lin

Looking at that list, I'm still under the impression that I should not need to use a Gateway. My data source is from the web.

After testing out a new data set, it appears to be the web source from jotform that is causing the issue. I got the same error when that was my only data source.

Again, it's a web source that doesn't require credentials to access, why then is it being treated like on-premise data that requires a gateway?

Any recommendations for how to address it?
