Connect MySQL RDS Amazon DB to Dataflow

Hello everyone,

I've been really struggling with an issue over the last 2 days so I'm calling on the PBI community here.

Topic: creating a dataflow connected to an Amazon RDS Aurora DB (MySQL).

Step #1: connect Power BI Desktop to RDS [OK]

  • I have configured an Aurora (MySQL) Database hosted on Amazon RDS

Public accessibility set to YESPublic accessibility set to YES

  • I have installed the recent MySQL Connector 8.0.19 on my local Machine
  • I have connected a PBI Desktop file to the DB from my local machine using the MySQL connector

Step #2: Connect a Dataset to RDS [OK]

Before trying to create a dataflow, I have published it to a Dataset.

  • I installed the MySQL connector 0.19 on my server (where the gateway is installed)
  • I have configured the MySQL data source in the Gateway Cluster

  • I have successfully configured and refreshed the dataset to using the data gateway (not a personal gateway)

Connect a dataflow to RDS [KO]

  • Then I tried to create a dataflow using the MySQL connector but I got this error:

MySQL: We were unable to find a database provider with invariant name 'MySql.Data.MySqlClient'. This error could've been the result of provider-specific client software being required, but missing on this computer. To download client software for this provider, visit the following site and choose the 64-bit (x64) version of, at minimum, 'MySQL Connector/Net': https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=278885

This is where I'm getting confused because:

  1. The link https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=278885 redirects to MySQL driver page but there is no 64-bit version to be found

  2. I previously installed the MySQL 32-bit connector and it worked like a charm using a dataset

So instead of using the MySQL connector, I opened a blank query and wrote the code myself and this time it worked

I've repeated the same operation for the other tables I needed. Sometimes I got the error message again but I managed to retrieve all tables by trying several times until it gets accepted, error was very inconsistent.

Then I configured successfully my dataflow refresh

Unfortunately dataflow refresh never succeeded. However during the first attempt, the dataflow managed to refresh several tables from the MySQL Database before failing.

Any help or idea would be very helpful.

Thank you!

Hi, @Anonymous

Based on your description, I did some tests and it appeared normal on Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service and dataflow. I failed to reproduce your scenario.

The version of mysql-connector is 8.0.19(32 bit). My gateway version number is 3000.27.30(February 2020). I wonder if you are using the same gateway for tests.

Best Regards

Allan

Hello @v-alq-msft,

Thank you for your feedback. My gateway version is March 2020 (version 3000.31.3).

Would you be able to test with this version? Not sure how easy is to downgrade.

Regards,
