Connect Excel to Power BI Dataset - Row Level Security not working

Hi everyone,

our users want to use there Excel Desktop App and connect to a PowerBI Dataset.

Within the Dataset a Row Level Security is setup and when testing that one in Power BI Service RLS works fine.

Users should only be able to connect via Excel and not log in into Service.

I'm granting them Build access to workspace where Dataset is stored.

In Excel they have than access to that Dataset, but RLS gets lost and they can see all data.

Anyone any idea how to set it up correctly?

Thanks in advance

Hi, What can I say. Be sure you define the roles in Power BI desktop, but after publishing to the service, you need also add members under this role to take effect for this user. The person should be a Viewer in the workspace. You can also use Test as role to check results.

The docs says it is possible even giving the build permission: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/enterprise/service-admin-rls#using-rls-with-workspaces-in-...

I hope that helps,
