Confused - When I publish to the cloud can anyone see it?

So I have heard several times that if you publish a report or dashboard to the cloud it can be seen by anyone.  Does this mean anyone?  Or do you have to have the URL?

A coworker insist that our cloud is private.  In that when we publish to the cloud only those in our organization can see the report.  Even if someone outside our company has the URL or so other means, they can not see the report.

If it is Public to everyone, what good does sharing with someone do?

Any knowledge associated with this topic is helpful..

Thanks,

Mike

The answer to this question will entirely depend if you are all talking about the same "Publish".

In your Power BI desktop you can publish your report into the cloud, referred to as the Power BI Service.  This report will only be available to whomever has the security access into the Workspace where this is uploaded and only if they have Power BI Pro.

When a report is within the Power BI Service, you have an option to publish the workspace as an app.  This will let you specify a second group that will have viewing access to these reports if either:

  • The user has Power BI Pro
  • The workspace is part of the Premium Capacity.

Lastly, a report can be "Published to the Web" from within the Power BI Service.  This creates a URL that is 100% public that any person can view should they discover the URL.
