Clicking Report URL from Excel makes PowerBI redirect to logon page...

Hey Everyone

I am trying to generate email for admins with links to dynamically generated PowerBI reports using report URL filter for each computer in a excel list.

The link works great if I Type/Copy paste it, but if I open from Excel by clicking the URL, then PowerBI sends me to the front page.

Other links works great from excel, it is only PowerBI links (afaik) that fails.

It seems VERY weird

The report link is similar to :

https://app.powerbi.com/groups/asdf-ee7b-4205-a812-asdsada198cf6/reports/asdfgh-66c0-4f90-bcd3-b76as...

When URl is opened from Excel, I am redirected to:

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/landing/signin/?ru=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.powerbi.com%2F%3Froute%3Dgr........

it requests logon, and after logon I am sent to my front page.

(logon is usually working as single sign on for this browser.)

I have tried Chrome and IE.

So I suspected something about weird characters, so I shorten the URl using goo.gl:

to make the url similar to:

https://goo.gl/m3r3aa

But it does the name! .. works if I Paste, redirect if I click.

I am not sure where this error is, but as it is only PowerBI links that does not work I posted it here.

Does anyone know what happens and how I can link to a PowerBI report from an excel sheet?

Thanks!

Hi

I found that the best way was to copy your report URL into Excel as normal, click it from Excel and it will open with a sign in page, click sign in which takes you back to the report but this time copy the URL in teh address bar and use that as your Excel report URL. The URL normally ends in check=1 from my experience but maybe different and if it works for you then hey go with it. One day MS wil make their products work together 🙂

This worked like a charm. Thank you.

HI @JakobGsvendsen,

According to your description, I think this issue more related to excel.(open power bi url stored in excel)

Maybe you can try to contact to excel team to get further support.

I was posting here as it seemed to be only Powerbi links. As Azure links etc works fine.

But I finally found others we same issue. It Seem to be a known issue wimhich ms has done nothing to fix the last 6 years.

I believe we will just skip either using Powerbi or excel. Too bad products don't work well together and that an issue from over 8 years ago haven't seen fixed (in excel)
