Hi,
We currently have many production reports running on the service which read on-premise data using a gateway server 24*7
What is the the best practice for upgrading the power bi gateway software on the gateway server as believe the software changes every month.
Some key questions
1) If report running whilst gateway server software updating will it fail?
2) Do you just run the install on top of existing gateway serversoftware with no need to uninstall exiting one.
3) Will all existing gateway service remain after update e.g wantto ensure we don't have to set up data sources again etc.
4) What if anything needs backed up?
Any other tips/best practice would be useful.
e.g we dont currently have a gatewy cluster with e.g 2 gateway servers If did have is it posible to ask a report to use a specific gateway cluster such that coudl update members of a cluster one at a time
Thanks

Hi @po ,
1) During the process of updating the gateway, your gateway will be offline and the dataset being refreshed will fail at this time. We recommend that you update gateway members one after the other without a long lag. Please follow the following steps while updating a gateway cluster with two or more members:
Disabling a gateway makes sure the load balancer does not try to excecute queries on the member you are updating, hence reducing delays and failures.
2) You could install other applications on the gateway machine, but this may degrade gateway performance. If you do install other applications on the gateway machine, be sure to monitor the gateway closely to check if there's any resource contention. For more related considerations, please refer to Install an on-premises data gateway .
3) Updating a gateway will not affect the data sources already configured for the gateway.
4) The most important thing is to make sure you have got the Recovery Key known before an upgrade. If anything goes wrong you could re-install and use the recovery key to keep all existing data sources.
