Azure Synapse Data Source Credentials, Failed to test the connection to your data source

I am creating a proof of concept Power BI report, connection to an Azure Synapse serverless resource.

I create the report in Power BI Desktop using the "Azure SQL database" connector and everything works fine.

Next, I publish the report to the Power BI Service. When I access the report, I can see the data, but refreshing is not available.

In the report settings, under the "Data source credentials" options, I get a "Failed to test the connection to your data source. Please retry your credentials." message. Trying to do so, I get this dialog which doesn't make any sense.

While I was setting up the connection on Power BI Desktop, I had these Data source settings:

How can I configure the Azure Synapse datasource on Power BI Service?

Many thanks!

are you using direct query or imported?  You will need to understand how authentication will work with power bi in terms of  the organisational policy on it depending on dq or imported?  It might be SSO or maybe you need a gateway set up.  I also think your auth method might be wrong, try using OAuth rather than basic.

If I took the time to answer your question and I came up with a solution, please mark my post as a solution and /or give kudos freely for the effort 🙂 Thank you!
