Azure SQL Data Warehouse - Is a Data Gateway Required if Data Already in the 365 Cloud?

Hi! Currently, we have data stored in Amazon AWS RDS (not public, VPN required to access if off-premises). We are looking for solutions that may not require a data gateway installation. Is there any setup with Azure that doesn't require a gateway? I'm struggling to figure out if the data is stored in the 365 cloud via Azure, why we would need the gateway?

Hi there

As far as I know because the data is stored in AWS on RDS that is not seen as a cloud source but rather as an On-Prem SQL source.

The only way I know it currently works is if the database is located in Azure then the Gateway is not required.

Hi @riegersn ,

@GilbertQ  is right.

"we have data stored in Amazon AWS RDS (not public, VPN required to access if off-premises). We are looking for solutions that may not require a data gateway installation. "

The gateway is necessary if your data source is Amazon AWS RDS.

"Is there any setup with Azure that doesn't require a gateway?"

The gateway is not necessary if your data is from Azure.

"I'm struggling to figure out if the data is stored in the 365 cloud via Azure, why we would need the gateway?"

The dataset is stored in Azure Blob. You need to query the data source when refresh the dataset, so for non-public network data, you need a gateway.
