Authorization question on linked Dataflows

Following situation:

  • I have two workspaces - both are on the same premium capacity.
  • Workspace A has several Dataflows, which are reading/transforming data from different data sources.
  • I have created a linked Dataflow (B.1) in workspace B pointing to the "original" Datafow in workspace A.
  • Workspace B has also other Dataflows (B.2) reading/transforming data from other data sources (not to any other Dataflow)
  • Users have no access to workspace A and Member access in workspace B. I do have Admin access to both workspaces.

Observation:

  • Myself: I can successfullly connect to all Dataflows from Power BI Desktop in Workspace A & B
  • Users: can only see the title of the linked Dataflow B.1 but not any entities below and hence cannot connect to those ones.
  • Users: can see/connect to the Dataflow B.2 from PBI Desktop

Question:

  1. Is this the expected behaviour, that users do not have access to linked Dataflows?

As an alternative I would need to replicate the Dataflows from workspace A to workspace B, but this has the downside of additional workload on the system, as both Dataflows need to be refreshed separately. Providing the users with member access to workspace A would solve the problem but is not an option.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

HI @FrankPreusker,

It sounds like the users can access workspace B reports but not has permission to access the report data source. How did these datasets configure? Have you shared your credentials with the viewers?

That is expected behavior, (un)fortunately. If these are v2 workspaces (and they should be) then you can give the users Read (not Member) access to workspace A.
