Anyone got the new Analyze in Excel feature working?

I have tried to get this new feature to work.  I click Analyze in Excel, installed the new software (64 bit because i am running 64 bit Windows/Office) and then tried to Authenticate.  It gave me a forbidden erorr and then reprompted for me to authenticate against the Power BI SSAS Server.  No matter what I try, I can't authenticate.  I am using my Power BI email address for the user name and my correct Power BI password.

So I checked on my other AAD domain joined computer and sure enough that computer worked fine with connection to that power bi domain BUT NOT to my other power bi domain - the same situation I experienced in my previous post.

So here are my questions @tarostok - is the Azure AAD domain join a necessary condition to connect to the service?  Also, can we connect to two different domains on the same computer (larger question)? Tal, feel free to contact me as well austin@powerpivotpro.com

Hi Tarostok,

So is it true that we need to have the Pro version to use the Excel Analyze Feature?

Hi,

No need for Pro version for this feature.

I will be happy to have a Skype call with you and try to help you.

Thanks,

Tal

Thanks Tal and will the dataset connections; SQL connection, entered data, Excel make any difference or should they all function that same?

If you received "Forbidden" error it should not be related to the data, Excel SQL etc.

Did you get "Forbidden"?

If the answer to the above is yes, when you opened the downloaded ODC file, did you get AAD sign-in window?

Thanks,

Tal

In my case, the first time I did this I got some Power BI authenticaion window - I believe it looked like the one you posted.  It failed on login, then from then on I always get the forbidden error followed by the SSAS login window.

I tried to clear the credentials on my PC to get the first login page back, but that was no successful

Also are there any ports that need to be open to connect to the dataset?

Working fine for me.

No idea if this is connected, but did you save the original odc-file created?

  1. The doc file was downloaded and saved in the download folder. For some reason it does t like my authentication.

I'm seeing the same issue. Not sure do we need the Pro version to get this working?

I thought the pro version may be the issue too.  But I tested it "extend pro trial for 60 days" and it didn't fix the problem.  There must be something else wrong as I see a few people here with the same problem.

I've only gotten this to work on a computer that was joined through the Azure Active Directory domain on the same domain as my Power BI tenant.  In other words, connecting to Power BI on my @tenthousandthings domain on a computer that was joined through AAD to that domain.

When I tried to connect to another data model living in my @themaids domain on my computer that was joined through my @tenthousandthings domain I couldn't connect on that computer and got the error that Matt is describing.  I'm going to be at a computer tomorrow that is connected through AAD to the @maids domain and I'll see if that allows me to connect.

Here's my question - what credentials is the service reaching for when trying to connect?

1. The current user's credentials -- looking at the OS, when you login to your machine

2. The current user's credentials -- looking at Excel, you know where you sign in at the top right of the application

3. Some other not obvious set of credentials

Previous Comment:     I have the pro version but cannot get this to work. When I try and open the file it give me an error stating that "Initialization oft he data source failed."

NEw Information: I have uninstalled and reinstalled the adaptor and now it works perfectly. Perhaps it is the pro version. NOt sure why the first installation did not work.
