With SQL Server 2016, can we install the latest Report Server? Want to deploy Power BI reports that open in the broswer for user.
I understand that in Report Server 2016, you can deploy power BI reports to the report server or Report Portal. When the user clicks on a report it opens the report in Power BI desktop. But in 2017, with Power BI Report server or the report portal, the report opens in the browser when the user clicks the report. Having the report open in the browser is most preferable.
We have a fresh Server install and are getting ready to install SQL Server 2016 on it. Can I install the new Report portal? from 2017.. Or what ever it is called... So I can deploy Power BI reports (and SSRS reports), but when the user clicks a power BI report it opens in the browser and there is no need for the end user to have Power BI desktop installed.
In our enviorment currently it is difficult to download power bi desktop for end users. So if they could view a report without having desktop installed that would be great. We can not deploy reports to the cloud either.
Our dba team does not want to support 2017 quite yet.
You need a different product that SQL Server Reporting Services. You need to use PowerBI Report Server - that is a superset service of the Reporting Services you know and use, but with the ability to render reports in the web portal, rather than the experience you are having. Here is a good intro: https://www.blue-granite.com/blog/introducing-power-bi-report-server
The this is that to use it, you will need either PowerBI Premium SKU or SQL Server Enterprise + Software Assurance.
