Users are getting authentication prompt then Error 401 when using edge with work server

We have tried with a few different users and all have the same repeated prompts for credentials. I have tried all combinations with/without UPN or DOMAIN etc and just get repeated prompt, clicking cancel gives error 401. 

 

I have cleared all cache/cookies

I have tried inprivate browsing

I have tried rebooting my machine 

I have added to trusted sites (even though its a domain server)

 

This has affected every person we have tried with but only on Edge. Chrome works fine with no authentication prompt.

 

Any help greatly appreciated!

The work around has been to access the web browswer through Citrix rather than the computer's browser.

I have not heard anything back on this. I may have to log it with Microsoft.

What's the version of your Power BI Report Server and Microsoft Edge?

Does it work previously? When does this issue start to appear?

Its powerBI report server 15.0.2.557

 

I am not sure if Edge was used before successfully but I can only assume it has been, the issue was reported last week by users and we have tested on multiple machines in IT since, all windows 10. I have tried with edge ver 99.xxx and the latest which was 100.xx.

So you are using August 2018, which released on August 30, 2018. It's a very old version. Give me some time to test.

Thank you Icey, I look forward to your test results. For the upgrade, do you know if upgrading the work server to January 2022 release will affect any of the older PowerBI reports? We currently have the workaround (use Chrome) so I have some time to find a fix. I worry that upgrading the work server could cause other issues.

I have tested with PBIRS Aug 2018. But it works well. Maybe you can check the log of PBIRS at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Power BI Report Server\PBIRS\LogFiles.

Or you can try to uninstall plugins and reset Edge to see if it is caused by the custom setting of Edge.

 

 

And for upgrading PBIRS, to my knowledge, it won't affect the older Power BI Reports. 

 

But there is one thing to note that the models are with enhanced metadata from Oct 2020. And when you are using Jan 2022 PBIRS, it would be better to create your reports based on the corresponding version of PBI Desktop (optimized for Power BI Report Server).

 

Before you upgrade a report server, we recommend the following steps to back up your report server.

 

1. Backing up the encryption keys

2. Backing up the report server databases

3. Backing up the configuration files

Ok so I bit the bullet and took a snapshot of the server and DB backups prior. I am now on Jan2022 version. Unfortunately the issue persists and only with Edge. I have tried from multiple machines INCLUDING clearing all cookies and resetting edge to defaults but still get repeatedly prompted for authentication and eventually a 401 error. Any other ideas? Specifically, which logs should I check out? I have them ordered by date/time stamp and the latest ones dont show login errors...

 

At least so far we are on a newer version 🙂

You can check the log file named "RSPortal_xxx.log".

 

And you can also catch the browser trace with F12->Network. For detailed steps, please check: Collect a browser trace.

Hi Icey, RSPortal has not updated since 16/05 and doesnt update no matter how many times I have the failed attempts. Here is the log file from the network trace in dev tools. I have changed server name and IP. I can only see one discrepancy and that is that it seems to think it is on GMT when we are currently in BST so there is a 1-hour difference in the timestamps BUT on the PoswerBI work server the time is correct and matches my workstation. The other error I see under network is {Failed to load response data: No resources with given identifier found}

Any more pointers? My users are starting to get 'Edgy' 🙂

I am having a similar issue in both browsers. It keeps asking for my credentials and then doesn't login. it prompts me repeatedly.

Please let me know if you find a solution. I have as yet found nothing and this forum has been a dead end.
