Unable to Save to PowerBI Reporting Server

I'm new to PowerBI but have been a SQL Server DBA for years.  We just got through POC of PowerBI and are trying to get this into a Dev environment.  We are unable to load reports either through the Save As to a PowerBI Report Server or Upload directly from the site as mentioned in multiple posts.

Installations:

Windows Server 2012

PowerBI Report Server:  14.0.600.442

PowerBI Desktop:  2.56.5023.1043 64-bit (March 2018)

Reading through other blogs.  I made sure that we only have the PowerBI Reporting Server installed.  The Service Account running PowerBI is part of the local admin group.  I'm part of the local admin group of the server.  Both accounts are sa within SQL Server.  I originally attempted from my laptop.  When I couldn't find an error, I installed PowerBI Desktop directly on the server.  I can't seem to find an error through the logs I've looked into.  I'm new and baffled!  Below are the contents of the areas discussed.

I enabled diagnostics and went through the PowerBI Trace Performance Logs:

PBIDesktop

Microsoft.Mashup.Container

FrownSnapshot:

There were two files a json and SQL Profiler, but no log?

Hi,

I was getting the "An error occured while attempting to save the report to Power BI Report Server" error message when trying to publish my PBI reports to PBI Report Server. However, when I downgraded my PBI desktop (optimised for Report Server) to match the Report Server version so in my case uninstalling my desktop version (March 2018) then installing Oct 2017) this did the trick and I was able to publish successfully without any issues.

The other option is to obviously upgrade the Report Server to the latest version (or to match your desktop version) but this should be tested first on non-production systems and it's easier to test locally first before messing with servers.

Hope this helps,

Jay

I had similar issue when I installed March 2018 on our Dev server, Production was still running Oct 2017 version. I was able to install Desktop RS March 2018 version along while leaving the Oct 2017 RS Desktop version. Tricky part is specifying different folders for each installation, this allows you to have multiple RS versions, and at least 1 Service version. If you try to use one Desktop RS version to save to a Power BI Report server with a different version you will get errors like the ones in the original question on this post.

Hey @cragland,

We are currently having the same issue on our Prod server even though our Dev and Test have no issues.

You should be able to find the fix HERE.  (Basically put the service account running Power BI in the local admin group on the server)  We are currently waiting on our corporate AD people to make the change for us.  I hope this helps.

Jasel,

Thank you for your response, I had already done that which at this point makes no sense why it wouldn't work.

Hi Jasel,

Just wondering...

What error message do you get in PBI Desktop?

Did publishing from the PBI Desktop installation on the server work?

Is the PBI Report Server portal running and accessible from a web browser?

Have you configured permissions within the PBI Report Server portal allowing people to publish reports?

Hi Jasel,

I changed the credentials to my elevated for our environment just to see if we could get past the errors.  The PowerBI Report Server is set up and using my elevated credentials right now.  I'm an administrator on the server and within SQL Server.  The report I'm trying to publish has multiple tabs using spreadsheets.  When I began having issues, I moved everything onto the server just to remove having to go through the environment to publish.  I made sure to change the path to the drive the spreadsheets now reside on.

save as to the report server:  An error occurred while attempting to save the rport to Power BI report server

upload from the web page:  There was an error uploading your .pbix file.  Verify that the file has not be corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

@jcollinson2001 - I'll post my issue in a seperate thread so we don't hijack this one.

Jasel - apologies the questions were actually meant for the post owner (sorry it was early when I replied!!).
