Row-Level Security with Direct Query (not SSAS)

We have set up several reports based on a Direct Query out to a standard SQL database contained on the same server as our instance of the Power BI Report Server. The tables are queried using a Live Connection in Power BI Desktop.

Everything work well and pulls in data properly with all relationships set up within the Power BI Desktop pulling through properly. We are trying to implement Row Level Security with this solution and I am not sure if we are missing something simple or if Row Level Security is not possible with a Direct Query to a SQL Database that isn't a SSAS database (which we are trying to avoid as we prefer to be able to adjust relationships within Power BI Desktop).

We can set up roles properly within Power BI Desktop, and previewing with those roles is something that we are also able to do. The problem is that we cannot find out how to assign users or groups to roles.

We've found many solutions online, but this all apply to versions that are not Report Server. Is this something that is possible? If so, how do we assign users to roles?

Thanks for any help

Hi @WSwanson,

For non-SSAS live connection, RLS is not supported in the current version of the Power BI Report Server.

Please see jtarquino's reply here.
