Princing of a Power BI Report Server installation on two machines

Hi,

I need to install Power BI Report Server by using two machines (as it is possible for SSRS):

  • the first one as front-end role,
  • the second one as database server role to host the two dbs of the Report Server.

I've an Enterprise Edition of SQL Server 2016 installed on the database server; do I need to acquire another SQL Server Enterpise or Standard Edition to license the front-end machine?

Many thanks

Hi @Anonymous,

  • the first one as front-end role

On the front-end server, you need to install Power BI Report Server with a valid Product Key, not the SQL Server license.

  • the second one as database server role to host the two dbs of the Report Server

On the back-end server, in order to host report server DB, you should install SQL Server with its license.

Best regards,

Yuliana Gu

Hi Yuliana Gu,

If I buy SQL Server Enterprise License + SA  to install SQL Server on the back-end server , I will get a Power BI Report Server product key.

Can I use this product key to install Power BI Report Server on the front-end server  ?   The back-end run only SQL Server without Power BI Report Server installed.

Or,  I should buy another SQL Server Enterprise License + SA  or  subscribe Power BI premium in order to get another product key for the front-end Power BI Report Server ?

Best Regards,
Steven.
