Hello,
We have installed a Power Bi Report Server on premise and now we have a question about security: Do the users security comes from Active Directory or from server security groups?
Thank you
User security comes from the server security groups. Users are only maintained through windows AD groups. Those AD groups are then assigned permissions through the security groups defined in the Power BI Report server. A good approach is to define windows AD groups and add users to these groups. Then grant perissions to these windows AD groups through the security groups in Power BI Report Server. Afterwards you can simply add/remove users from the windows AD groups as needed.
I would suspect that both options would probably work. But I would suggest only using AD groups. If you ever need to scale out or restore Report Server onto another machine you won't loose any security settings if you have AD groups. Plus you have the option that you can also use AD Groups to grant access to other resources (like SQL Server databases) so by adding a user to 1 AD Group they get access to the report and the data source.
