PBIRS to PBI Premium - Has anyone made the switch?

Has anyone here started off with Power BI Report Server but has now decided to switch over to Power BI Premium because of the breadth of new features Microsoft is offering with it, especially in the past year or so and what's planned for the future.

For my company, PBIRS was an easy first step as we had an SQL Server Enterprise license and it essentially came free with it. We run PBIRS as primarily the visualization layer with SSAS/SSIS/SQL Server forming the backend infrastructure.

However, now with all the new features being introduced in PBI Premium and not in PBIRS, I'm starting to think it would be a good idea to move to PBI Premium. I do need justify the potential additional costs though so trying to get a sense of how to go about it.

Is there a good feature showcase video/blog post that would cover all the goodness of premium and appeal to C-level execs?

Has anyone taken that leap and can share their experience?

Are there any downsides to moving to PBI Premium?

There isn't a trial option so has anyone followed any other approach to try things out before purchasing premium?

Any inputs, thoughts will be much appreciated and I'm sure will help others who might be thinking of making the switch too.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @vickyd ,

You could reference the documents and video below to learn more about Premium.

Power BI Premium FAQ

Understanding the basics of Power BI Premium

For trial Premium,  you can purchase A SKUs for testing and other scenarios, which is billed hourly. As long as you sign into Azure with an account that is also a Power BI admin (when you create the SKU), you will see the A SKU capacity under Settings->Admin portal->Capacity settings->Power BI Embedded. You can assign workspaces to this capacity as described in this doc: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-admin-premium-manage. You will then be able to test the functionality that Power BI Premium offers with the exception of broad sharing/consumption for free users.

Hi Vicky,

We recently announced the availability of a Premium Per User license, which will have its own trial. So hopefully this is another option to experiment on top of A skus posted above. More details below:

Thanks
