Issues linking the on-premise gateway using data type "folder"

I have a desktop report that links to around 100 different excel files, all sitting in the same folder on a company drive.  I was not able to use the "Get Data - Folder" option because all of the excel files are not setup the same way, different column names on most.  So I had to use the "Get Data - Excel" on all.  Here is an example of my "Advanced Editor" code

let
Source = Excel.Workbook(File.Contents("\\***********\********\Purchasing\IPL's\73-20-11 3244735.xlsx"), null, true),
Sheet1_Sheet = Source{[Item="Sheet1",Kind="Sheet"]}[Data],...........

I've published the report and set-up a "Data Source Type - Folder" pointing to the folder where all of these excel files are located. It says "Connection Successful".  Yet, I can't link the gateway to that report and it appears it wants me to set up a gateway for each individual excel file.

I read this article posted by Chris Webb that seems to address the issue I'm having but I am not hav...

Any ideas other than creating a separate gateway for each excel file?

Well, it is an older blog article, things may have changed, perhaps @cwebb can indicate if it still works?

Hmm, I've just taken a look and something has definitely changed. I'll find out what and report back.
