Excel file as shared data source

Is there a step by step guide anywhere to set an Excel file as a shared datasource in PBI RS? The question is not about importing it into a single model which is obvious; it's about creating a shared datasource (New - Data Source in PBI RS menu) that can be reused to create server-wide datasets and essentially by more than one report on the server.

The data sources created in the PBIRS menu are only applicable to paginated reports. You cannot use them from Power BI Desktop based reports.

Aren't they also applicable to datasets created through the same menu and KPIs that you can create there as well? Anyways, there needs to be a recommended approach and/or step by step guide, since excel is a rather common data source for small tasks.
