I am wanting to add two columns to create a new column.

SUM in Excel and SUM in DAX are very different. If you are adding a calculated column, just use = [column1] + [column2].
If you are doing a custom column in Power Query, it is the same syntax - = [column1] + [column2], there is no SUM() in Power Query.
If you are doing a measure, we'll need to see more of what it is you are trying to accomplish.
