Work item does not exist, or you do not have permissions to read it error, when using Azure DevOps

After some team cleanup within our Azure DevOps boards, I am experiencing an error that I am unfamiliar when attempting to refresh my dashboard. The dashboard has Azure DevOps as it's only data source. There are ODBC errors but more importantly, there is an error that specifically mentions a work item "An error occurred in the ‘Functions’ query. Error: TF401232: Work item xxxxx does not exist, or you do not have permissions to read it." I am not sure if this error is related to removal or deletion of a work item hierarchy or a permissions/credentials issue

Does anyone have experience with this error? I see there is limited awareness on how to resolve this issue when scouring the web

Hi @bblackwell3 ,

I will definitely try and see if it provides a solution.

If there any updates?

Best Regards,
Eyelyn Qin

@v-eqin-msft  still no solution at this point 😞

I am sorry @bblackwell3 , but I think I won't be of any help here. Without knowing more about the function or the model, it is hard to come up with a solution on how to fix this. It seems like a reference broke when the item(s) were deleted and the function does not like this. Maybe there is still a task / feature / commit / Pull Request / test run that refers to the deleted task and your function wants to create a connection...

Not something very sustainable, but apparently you can restore work items as well:

Remove, delete, and restore work items in Azure Boards - Azure Boards | Microsoft Docs

Good Luck! 🙂

I agree that a broken reference seems to be the issue. Thank you for sending over that link. I will definitely try and see if it provides a solution. Thanks again!

Hi @bblackwell3 ,

Have you tried to search for that work item in ADO? Does it exist or not?

Hey @tackytechtom . Yes, I have searched ADO and the work item no longer exists

Hi @bblackwell3 ,

Awesome! Then you know, that your issue is related the deletion of the work item. That was what you were wondering in the first place, wasn't it? 🙂

Yes @tackytechtom  that appears to be the issue. Deletion or moving of the work item in Azure. However, we can't restore the work item and are unsure why the removal of the item is still causing failure

I see. The error message mentions a function query where the error occurred. Can you check what the function does or send the M Power Query?

@tackytechtom I am not that familiar with the functions query but below is what I see in Transform Data for the function query

= [
WiqlRunQueryById = WiqlRunQueryById,
WiqlRunFlatWorkItemQueryById = WiqlRunFlatWorkItemQueryById,
WiqlRunTreeWorkItemLinkQueryById = WiqlRunTreeQueryById,
WiqlRunOneHopWorkItemQueryById = WiqlRunOneHopWorkItemQueryById,
WiqlRunOneHopWorkItemLinkQueryById = WiqlRunOneHopWorkItemLinkQueryById
]
