Hi all. I have a client who is currently running a Windows Server running SSAS (2017) for their analysis services and want me to connect power BI to it using the on-prem gateway.
Seems simple enough, but the real issue I seem to be hitting is that the server is not on a domain, which seems to be a large limitation when connecting the gateway.
I have setup the gateway, logged in etc. and I can see the gateway on the Power BI service portal. However, the user/username I use to login to the Power BI service does not have an equivallent user on the Windows Server and I dont seem to be able to figure out if user mapping is the right way to go, or is this just not going to work...
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Specifically, my issue is that the Power BI service cannot see the list of SSAS databases/models that are published.
On a small side note, I have successfully connected Power BI desktop to the SSAS server using "run as" to mimic one of the users on the SSAS server.
(FYI I have cross posted this on reddit, I will post any updates if there is a resolution)

@xmark,
The machine that installed SSAS should be domain-joined, and the on-premises gateway needs to be installed on a machine in the same domain as the SSAS server, or in another domain that’s trusted, otherwise, you will get errors when connecting to SSAS in Power BI Service.

Lydia
