No .pbix option in "Open file as" dialog

I am working  through examples from Pro Power BI Desktop by Adam Aspin. In Chapter 7, page 184, it says to launch Power BI Desktop and open C:\PowerBIDesktopSamples\Example1.pbix. This is successful. Next, it says to click on Transform Data. I do, and the Query Editor opens as expected. However, I get the following error:

DataSource.Error: Could not find file 'C:\PowerBiDesktopSamples\BrilliantBritishCars.xlsx'.

Details:     C:\PowerBiDesktopSamples\BrilliantBritishCars.xlsx

I click on the “Go to Error” box, then on “Edit Settings”. It turns out the path is

C:\PowerBiDesktopSamples\BrilliantBritishCars.xlsx.

So, I change this to C:\PowerBiDesktopSamples\Example1.pbix.

The problem is, in the Open file as dialog, there is no .pbix option so the error will not go away.

How can I fix this?

Did you unzip the .zip file and make sure the "BrilliantBritishCars.xlsx" 's location is "C:\PowerBiDesktopSamples\BrilliantBritishCars.xlsx"?

on these examples to show you how Power Query is working, they used an Excel-file. You need to check out if this file can be downloaded as well, otherwise you are not able to go through the lection.

Thanks. I downloaded everything in the .zip file provided. Also, the author specifically says to open the .pbix file. No matter; I wound up copying the data to Excel and then using the Get Data function to load it as an Excel file. So, we came to the same conclusion:)

I'm confused.  You said the error is caused by the path to a file not being correct but you've changed the filename?

If your query can't find C:\PowerBiDesktopSamples\BrilliantBritishCars.xlsx then change the query to poin to that file wherever it is.

It sounds like you've modified the query to load C:\PowerBiDesktopSamples\Example1.pbix but if the query is looking for an Excel file, this change will not fix the issue.

Locate the BrilliantBritishcars.xlsx file and change the query to point to it.

As I said, I changed the path to C:\PowerBiDesktopSamples\Example1.pbix. This is the desired path and file. The problem is Power BI is still looking for an .xlsx file in the path and doesn't find one. When I try to change the file type in the Open file as dialog, there is no .pbix option so the error will not go away.

Just saw your post on the Desktop forum.  From the screenshot it looks like you have opened the Example1.pbix file in PBI and are then trying to use the same file as a data source. It doesn't work that way, you can't use a file as a datasource for itself.

You said you  changed the path to C:\PowerBiDesktopSamples\Example1.pbix. This is the desired path and file - how do you know this is correct?  The initial error said it couldn't find the BrilliantBritishCars.xlsx file.  I still think you need to locate that file and point your PBIX file at it so it canload the workbook data.
