I have been using Power BI Desktop for about 6 months. I connect to our sql server and update data manually.
We are trying to set up a gateway server so we can set up an auto refresh.
We have the gateway installed and it says the connection is good.
However when I go to my dataset and choose schedule refresh - it says I have to set up a personal gateway or configure the data sources in this dataset for an existing gateway.
Can someone walk me through the steps to change the data source? Do I do this in the desktop mode?
Solved! Go to Solution.
You need to add your sql data source in the power bi service
The following link may help you: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-enterprise-manage-sql
Make sure server, database name and credentials are as you have them in your power bi desktop file that was published
Good luck

Tried that and still can't get it. Does the gateway have to be installed on the computer the desktop version is on? We installed it on a company server. Connection shows successful under Manage Gateways.
We figured it out. We don't have a gateway set up for the excel file we were accessing.
Oh yes, for every source you have configured in your pbix file, you must have configured in the service
That one has got me a couple of times
Good to hear you all are good to go
