Error 1069 - On Premises Data Gateway Service wont' start - logon failure

I have the On Premises Gateway installed on a Windows 7 PC. Not in personal mode.

It works fine until I do something as simple as run Windows Update and apply patches.

Then on the reboot, the service refuses to log in, with error 1069 in the event log and when I try to manually restart it.

It is configured with the default NT Service\PBIEgwService account that it installs with. That works fine.

The only fix is to uninstall, reinstall, and then select the "migrate/restore/takeover" gateway option.

Is there anything I am doing wrong to cause this? Is there any way to repair this without the lengthy uninstall/reboot/reinstall/takeover process? This is getting tiresome.

Hi @edhans

I tried to follow the guidance here and it worked for me: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-service-account

I have this issue as well. So far the only "fix" I have found is to open services.msc, open the 'PBIEgwService' service and retype my password. This lets you not have to reinstall the entire gateway but still not a true fix. I'm still searching for a better fix than this. I'll keep you updated.

This is working ✔️ until today. Thanks

@edhans,

Please help to post the gateway service logs which locate in C:\Users\PBIEgwService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\on-premises data gateway\Gateway*.log.

I’m not sure if the patched Windows updates affect the gateway service. But when you get 1069 error, have you checked that if the NT Service\PBIEgwService account has Log on as a Service right? And are you able to start gateway service when you change the service account to administrator of your computer?

Thanks Lydia. I have bookmarked this. When this happens again, which could be tomorrow or mid-December, I will definitely get the logs. The logs were delted when I uninstalled and removed everything before reinstalling.

I will also see if the PBIEgwService is somehow being denied the "log on as a service" right after an update. I tend to think that might be the problem and will test before I reinstall.
