Cannot attach dataset to Personal Gateway

First off, gateway installation was a bit strange in that I had to manually start the configurator and it never asked me for the Windows permissions. I did login as a new Office 365 user created specifically to troubleshoot this. The icon does show up in the system tray and does tell me it's "Connected: You're good to go!".

Okay so here's the skinny (have tried countless options and we're now down to this)...

  • The dataset was created in Power BI Desktop regular NOT Pro;
  • Again, I added a PowerBI user specifically to see if I can get this going, so the user has no baggage;
  • User logs in and has nothing (of note the Settings » Manage Gateways shows nothing);
  • Uploaded the dataset to the new user, and it shows up;
  • Click on Schedule Refresh for the Dataset and I get this...

Hi @finzilla,

Both personal gateway and on-premises gateway are Pro features and cannot be used with a free account. Thus, please ensure that the account you use to sign in Power BI Service is a pro account in order to schedule refresh for your dataset. You can try Power BI pro for 60 days as mentioned by the above warning.

In addition, after you install Power BI personal gateway, you will not find the gateway under “Manage Gateways”, this is an expected behavior. After you install Power BI personal gateway and configure the gateway, you are able to sign in data source and schedule refresh for the dataset in the dataset’s Settings screens, you can check the following example. For more details, please review this blog: https://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/4170/connect-to-onpremises-data-sources-with-power-bi-persona... .

However, if you install on-premises gateway and register it on your machine, you will find the registered gateway in the "Manage Gateways" page.

Thanks,
