Refresh data without plug-in in local machine

Hi all, for the project's requirement, I cannot put anything in the local machine, but seem like I need an On-Premise Gateway that connects to my Power Bi Desktop in my local machine in order to schedule refresh. How can I avoid using the local machine? If I use AWS Athena for using Direct Query, does that problem is solved? I also have seen that Athena requires a driver setting in local machine.

Thank you all.

This depends on your license. If your company has Premium capacities then you may want to install the standard/enterprise gateway (rather than the personal gateway) on a company VM that runs 24x7.  This would then not require your PC to be on all the time.

Cloud data sources do not need a gateway as long as they are visible from the Power BI service.  For "foreign"  clouds like AWS you most likely do need a gateway, and most likely it has to sit in AWS as well. The gateway VM needs to see both your data sources and the Azure service.
