How SQL Server Mobile Report could retrieve on-premises company data in Power BI Mobile apps

Hi Administrator,

Have questions on how SQL Server Mobile Report could retrieve on-premises company data in Power BI Mobile apps

1. Image the database engine, analysis services & SSRS 2016 are protected with company firewall (i.e. within company network), so how does Power BI Mobile apps to view the SQL Server Mobile Report through this authentication ?

Just see the link below it is connected to company server directly, seems it is not work in reality. This work as similar as Power BI gateway through cloud.

http://www.victorrocca.com/configuring-sql-server-2016-components/

More technical specific, seems SQL Server Mobile report could be access through Power BI Mobile apps or browser in mobile device.

2 . Does company DM Zone have a public url and has a mapping IP behind then resolved the IP back to on-premises SSRS within company firewall is workable  ?

3. Q2 above only workable for web url, then does Power BI mobile apps also work on this way ? How is the correct way on the architecture design ?

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a739571f-9a32-4fb8-90ca-1e785c689e9c/accessing-ssr...

As case sharing for on-premises company data accessing through SQL Server Mobile report or Power BI Mobile apps is appreciated.

Thanks

Andy Wong

Hi Simon,

Does Windows 2012 R2 Server also capable for Power BI mobile apps to connect SSRS since it also has ADFS and Web Application Proxy features setting ?

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn528859.aspx

http://www.mistercloudtech.com/2015/11/25/how-to-install-and-configure-web-application-proxy-for-adf...

Thanks !

Hi Andykmwong,

We officially support Windows server 2016 only.

Thanks,

Gabi

Hi @gabil,

Can you help me if the scenario on this thread is similar to the thread I created (which can't access the data on report server for both browser and power bi mobile after using AD Application Proxy)?

Additionally, is there any document that says it is only supported by Windows Server 2016?

Thank you.

Thanks Gabi,

Think through ADFS connection to On-Premises would be the choice since I try using VPN connect to mobile has restriction due to company policy.

But taking the ADFS approach means all user profile would be stored in on-premises AD instead rather than Azure AD ?

Besides it needs to to use Windows Server 2016 seem that 2012 R2 Server do not have this capability.

Any more information for ADFS setting and architectire to connect through Power BI mobile apps ?

Thanks !

@andykmwong

Windows Server 2016 is required for the Web Application Proxy (WAP) and Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) servers. And connecting SSRS via Power BI is just a On-Premise solution, we can't use Azure AD.

Continue for above :

See that on-premises SSRS reports could be access through VPN connection, so that means if VPN software is installed on mobile then user could use broswer to view the report like in internal network since VPN already perform authentication ?

Any more information ?

Thanks !

Hi Andykmwong,

If you connect your mobile to the corporate network using VPN it allows you to connect to your on premisses SSRS server using borh browser and Power BI mobile app.

The other option to connect using ADFS is using your on premises AD and does not require and data to be hosted in the cloud.

Thanks,

Gabi

My questions above mainly to clarify whether accessing SSRS using ADFS via Web Application Proxy running on Windows Server 2016 in mobile device would involved any cloud based services from Microsoft as company has high concerns to publish privacy data to cloud & currently we do not use the Azure AD.

So we only traget below :

1. Have a visualize tool to create dashbaord to be viewed in mobile device, then the reports hosts in SSRS 2016 on premises server within company network.

2. Data is truly hosted on premises within company company network

3. Ensure mobile device to access on-premises reports (may be dashboard) do not take use any cloud services

Many thanks for information !

Thanks Gabi,

1. What is the authentication mechanism for Power BI Mobile to access SSRS reports On Premises through OAuth ? I mean whole on profile in Azure AD or truly on premises AD. From link below

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/jtarquino/2016/07/04/accessing-sql-server-reporting-services-mobile...

2. Does Q1 need to install the Power BI gateway ?

Thanks !

Hi Andykmwong,

Power BI mobile apps can connect to your on premises SSRS server by using a VPN connection or by using ADFS via Web Application Proxy running on Windows Server 2016.

For more information please read - https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-mobile-oauth-ssrs/

Thanks,

Gabi
