Hi, @lisa1

According to my research, the minimum requirements to run Power BI Desktop Windows Server 2012 R2, or later. You can check this:

And Microsoft recommends we using a client version of Windows such as Windows 10, rather than Windows Server.

Therefore, I think installing the official windows 10 system for your computer can be the best way to solve this problem.

What’s more, you can also check this document to troubleshoot opening Power BI Desktop:

If this is true you should update the Reqirements on the Download Page and a warning message in the installer would be nice:

Simply uninstall and reinstall from the previous installer. Unfortunatly i do not know if you can download old installers but i am used to keep the last 2-3 previous installers until the next update...

EDIT:

Check here: Previous monthly updates to Power BI Desktop and the Power BI service - Power BI | Microsoft Docs

There are Download Links for each Version. I think February 2021 is ok.

You can also download previous versions of Power BI Desktop if your organization requires it. We always recommend that you use the most recent version of Power BI Desktop, rather than a previous version. All previous versions have the following limitations:

  • Previous releases of Power BI Desktop are not being serviced - you should always use the most recent release for the latest features and updates.
  • It may not be possible to open files created or saved in newer releases of Power BI Desktop with previous versions of Power BI Desktop.
  • If you receive a warning when loading a report saved in a newer release of Power BI Desktop, then save that report in the previous version, you lose any information related to new features.
  • We only archive the English versions of Power BI Desktop.
