We are running Version 1.4.7024.16477 (January 2019) of report server. I have created a report that uses a few lists on an on-prem Sharepoint 2016 site as data source. I have published the report to the report server and when I set up the credentials (Windows auth) for the data source I get an error saying:
Log on failed. Ensure the user name and password are correct.
I have successfully logged in to the SharePoint site with the same credentials and browsed the needed lists.
There is a community thread where a user has experienced the same thing and was forced to upload the report to the service. In that particular case the source was probably SharePoint Online.
