Report - SVG Background Image Not Displaying

I'm getting an image error when using an SVG as the background image on a report page created in Power BI Desktop that is published to a workspace.

background_image_error.png

Tested in the following browsers:

  • Chrome 59.0.3071.115 (Official Build) (64-bit)
  • IE11 Version: 11.0.9600.18697 Update Version: 11.0.43

My current work around is to remove / add the svg by editing the report in the Power BI Service.

Let me know if you need the source files (svg and sample report). I can email them to you.

Hi @exceptionull,

Based on my test, .svg image can display fine in Power BI service. The browser we are using is Version 59.0.3071.115 (Official Build) (64-bit) as well. See:

To decide if the issue related to your Power BI service cluster, please download our test .pbix file here, publish it to service to see if it works fine on your side.

Hi @v-qiuyu-msft,

I tested with the provided .pbix and it displayed fine in the service after the initial publish.

It looks like the image error happens when the background image is changed and the report is published again.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open .pbix in Power BI Desktop
  2. Publish to Workspace
  3. Delete background image
  4. Add Steps.svg as the report page background.
  5. Save .pbix
  6. Publish and replace in Workspace

Let me know if you can reproduce it on your end.

Thank you,

Hi @v-qiuyu-msft,

Can you provide an update on this issue? My team is having to reapply the background to all pages of a report after every new publish. It is becoming a lot of work.

An easier method to reproduce the issue is:

  1. Open .pbix in Power BI Desktop
  2. Publish to Workspace
  3. Publish and replace in Workspace

Here's the .pbix file I have been using:

Hi @v-qiuyu-msft,

A team member of mine found another issue. It's related to the original issue when a report is used in an App.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open .pbix in Power BI Desktop
  2. Publish to Group Workspace
  3. Publish and replace in Group Workspace
  4. Navigate to the Group Workspace index page
  5. Click "Update App"
  6. Fill out required fields
  7. Click "Update App"
  8. Navigate to the report in the Group Workspace
  9. Edit the report and reapply the SVG background
  10. Save the report
  11. Navigate to the Group Workspace index page
  12. Click "Update App"
  13. Click "Update App"
  14. Navigate to the report in the App

The background will be blank. The only way to update it from here is to delete the report from the service and start over.

Thank you,

Brad Cannon
