Power BI Desktop cannot open report from Report Server unexpected error

Hi at all,

We are using Power BI report server on-premise. Unfortunately we encounter an error when trying to edit reports in Power BI Desktop. The issue can be reproduced:

  • when clicking the three dots beside an report on report server
  • choose "Edit in PowerBI Desktop"
  • Power BI Desktop starts on the local computer but shows "unexpected error encountered"

When donwloading the report to the filesystem and open it in PowerBI Desktop, everything is working as aspected. Afterwards the report can be uploaded to Report Server again without any issues.

Any idea what the matter could be? Here are some more details and traces:

Status: Investigating

Hi @seme ,

Do you need further confirmation that your Power BI Report Server and Desktop have been updated to the May version?

Will this problem still occur if I roll back one of them to the previous version?

Can this report be opened directly in Power BI Desktop or Power BI Report Server Desktop?

Hi Caitlyn,

We had the same issue with older versions of PowerBI report server and PowerBI Desktop. My hope was that an update to a newer release will fix that behaviour. So a rollback unfortunately won't fix the issue.

Yes, if I download the report and open it with Power BI Desktop, everything is fine.

Any other ideas? Thank you very much in advance.

Cheers,

seme

Hi,

we have same problem from may 2022 version. Just updated to September 2022 and it was not solved. Have you found any solution for this?

Hi everyone,

we use sep 2022 version and we have the same problem. The wierd thing is on the server where report server is installed the "edit in power bi desktop" option works fine. However, on other computers it encounters the same error.

Any ideas to solve this problem?

Thanks

Hi,

our problem was with authentication. Computer which wanted to edit was not in same domain as server. When editing form, PowerBI Desktop is trying to connect and download form through credentials which are logged.
