Personal bookmarks override new (hidden) bookmarks

Good day,

When a previous published report is changed / updated with a new hidden filter in the filter pane, and report consumer has an older personal bookmark on the report/page, this newly introduced filter is reset to all. This is very confusing, hidden filters should not be overriden by a personal bookmark even better not stored in personal bookmark at all.

Hi @ErwinS

You mentioned that this newly introduced filter is reset to all , can you explain it in detail ? You also mentioned that hidden filters should not be overriden by a personal bookmark even better not stored in personal bookmark at all ,  can you explain it with a sample ?

Sorry for the late response, was a bit occupied by other Power BI challenges.

Unfortunately, I can't share an example because of data. Will try to explain it a little better.

Suppose you publish a report, without further filters in the filter pane. After report is published, users start using rapport and create personal bookmark in the report.

After a while, there are (as usual) additional wishes such as a filter on the entire report, which you then put in the filter pane at report level and hide it so that it can no longer be adjusted.

However, as soon as you then republish the report (overwrite existing report), and user open report and applies personal bookmark then the new set filter is reset to default (no filter).

This is of course very confusing, because as an editor you have no idea which bookmarks end users create 'no view of'. Therefore, the comment that as soon as you apply a filter as an editor and hide it, it should remain that way at all times regardless of personal bookmarks.

I agree with @Irwin that old personal bookmarks can have unintended effects on newly added visuals (with visual filters applied) or filters added to the page. This is likely because the old bookmark has no saved settings for any new visuals or filters and so ends up clearing the filters when the bookmark is applied. This is a massive flaw in design and makes it very difficult to make modifications to reports, knowing that someones old bookmark is going to make the report provide incorrect data.
