Map Issues with New County Names from recent Census Data

Maps Issue:  When mapping by County Name for the USA, The following counties, or county area equivalents as defined by recent census bureau data are not mapping due to these being new names for areas 

 

The current correct names are:

  • Ogala Lakota County, SD
  • Kusilvak Census Area, AK

 

They were formerly known as:

  • Shannon County, SD
  • Wade Hampton Census Area, AK

This should be a Bing map issue but not Power BI issue. Power BI integrates with Bing to provide default map coordinates. If the area name cannot be located in Bing map correctly, it will also not be mapped correctly in Power BI Map visual.

While that's a good explanation of why it isn't working, Bing Maps recognizes that Kusilvak Census Area equals Wade Hampton Census Area, whereas Power BI does not. Hopefully the Power BI team can take this error report and use their clout within Microsoft to track down the proper fix.
