Error message when sharing report with someone that doesn't have PowerBI Pro is very misleading

I just shared a report with a colleague, and he got an error message saying something like "Permissions required: You cannot see the contents of this report because you do not have access to the underlying dataset. Please contact the owner of the dataset to get access". However, this error was caused because the user did not have PowerBI Pro. I think this message should reflect that. (Had to translate the message from Dutch, so wording might be slightly different)

Another problem is that even as a PowerBI service Admin, I have no way of knowing which users have a PowerBI Pro license, and which don't. Or did I not look in the right place?

Hi @Anonymous,

For the issue about misleading message, I have reported it internally: CRI 129461010. Will update here once I get any information.

To see which Power BI users have Pro license, you can go to Office 365 admin portal or Azure Active Directory to check it:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/admin/subscriptions-and-billing/assign-licenses-to-users?view=o365-worldwide

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/fundamentals/license-users-groups

Thanks Qiuyun!

As for the pro license status, to be able to see if someone has pro or not, you have to have some pretty serious rights in AD, which I don't have. As a PowerBI Service Admin I feel like I should also be able to see whether someone whom I share a dashboard with has Pro or not, for the simple reason of troubleshooting sharing issues :).

It would just be useful, but not critical 🙂

Thanks!

Hi @Anonymous,

The PG team already created a bug to track this issue. Will update here if I get new information.

I'm afraid the Power BI administrator role doesn't have full permission for licensing, see: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-admin-role
