Disable commenting from a setting within Power BI Desktop

At present, there is no access to this property except through the service (Report settings).  When republishing the pbix, it will overwrite this setting with whatever the report is set to.  There is no way to change this setting in the pbix.  Nor is there a way to even view it.  So the workflow is:

1. Publish the report

2. Go to the service and change the setting

3. Download the pbix from the service

4. Continue design then republish

Am I missing something???

Hi @jnixon

This function of Add comments to a dashboard or report applies to Service and does not support use on Desktop. So once you republish the report from Desktop, it will directly overwrite the previous report, unless you rename your report and then publish it. You can add comments to the renamed report .

Until now, comments has always been a property of Service. If you want to implement the setting of this property on Desktop, you can mention your thoughts to the Ideas Forum . If a feedback is high voted there by other customers, it will be promising that Microsoft Product Team will take it into consideration when designing the next version in the future.

Thank you Ailsa,

If the "Allow users to add comments" property only applies to the service, then why does publishing a pbix overwrite it?  Clearly the property is also present in the pbix file. When we finally located the property (in the service) and changed it to the desired state, it was overwritten when we republished the pbix.  So we were confident (wrongly) that the property must be changeable in the pbix.  Imagine our frustration.  So now the workflow is inefficient and risky since if we want to change the property, we must publish the most current pbix, then change the property, then download the pbix, save it to our repository, open it and continue to work with it.

In my opinion, this is not a feature request, it is a bug report.  If you want developers to use the service to maintain this property, then remove it from the pbix metadata.  Otherwise, expose it in Desktop/Options.

I can suggest this as an 'idea', but please consider it a Power BI design fault or bug.

Kind regards,

Jeff
